Think Security First! is designed to provide basic information relative to a safe computing environment.

The content provided is intended to provide the user with baseline information about operating their computing environment safely.  It also addresses other issues affecting daily life such as Identity Theft which arises outside the world of computing as well.

Think Security First! Safer surfing in six weeks.

SESSION 1:Identity Theft & Document Destruction – Identity Theft has become a significant problem in recent years due in part to the Internet. However, it happens many ways. This session provides you with the information needed to protect yourself and what you should do if you believe you have become a victim. While not often considered, a significant element to protecting your identity from theft is document destruction – both paper and digital.

SESSION 2: Malware & Phishing – Malware is the collective term used to refer to the many forms that are used to abscond with your personal information, steal your identity, misuse your computing resources for other purposes or to destroy the information on your computer. Many names are associated with malware including virus, worm, phishing, trojan, spyware, spam and many others too numerous to name. While phishing is simply another form of malware it presents a unique form that often cannot be detected/trapped by the various programs that are designed to protect you from malware. Rather, your own savvy is your best protector just as you use it today to protect yourself from many of the advertisements that come as junk mail or that appears in various publications.

SESSION 3:  Child Predators & Online Shopping and Banking – Child Predators are a great concern to all of us. What do we do to protect our children/grandchildren while at the same time allowing them to utilize the wonderful resource of the Internet? The convenience of online shopping and banking cannot be ignored. In many cases it is more economical and convenient. However there are associated risks, not much different than walking down the wrong street or doing business with questionable service providers, etc.

SESSION 4:Small Office, Home Office and Home Computer Security & Computer Backup – The computer(s) in your home, home office or small office (SOHO) should be protected. Many of the topics in this series cover some of the issues, but then we must tie them all together into one cohesive plan. The data stored within your computer, on your hard drive, is often very valuable to you and sometimes irreplaceable. Hard drives are a mechanical device and the only question is when will they fail? Data loss can occur for many reasons and backing up that data is the only means of ensuring that it can be recovered.

SESSION 5:Wireless Security & Laptop Security – The usage of wireless devices to access the Internet has become almost ubiquitous. It is convenient; I use it too. Unfortunately, many of its adopters have not implemented the security services that these devices provide. Unsecured, I can access your network, your computer and the Internet. I can steal or destroy your data and perform illegal acts on the Internet that will track back to you, not me. Unlike desktop computers, laptops present unique security challenges. These days we are hearing of significant thefts (those thefts resulting in the compromise of personal health information, personal financial information or other confidential data) on a near weekly basis. They are happening so often that you need to consider – what you should do to prevent such data compromise should your laptop be lost/stolen.

SESSION 6:Optional - A review of what has been taught – During Session 6 we will review the major points that have been presented over the past 5 sessions. Concerns of the students will be addressed and recommended references/resources will be identified. Finally, problems presented in prior sessions that could not be adequately addressed will be discussed here.
